The fastest growing area of Okinawa is Ameku, former setting for a massive US military housing complex.
The Ameku, Shintoshin, Omoromachi area is bustling with development, with dozens of shopping centers, office buildings and apartment complexes popping up the past half-dozen years. The military vacated the property in the early 1980’s.
Area leaders are now planning names for many of the new parks and bridges being created as part of green zones for public use. The largest new park is now “Shintoshin Park”. Others have been Named “Ameku Purin (Pudding) Park”, “Mekaru Tentomushi (Lady Bug) Park, and “Venoya Frrield Park.” Seven others will be named soon.
Two bridges being built for sidewalks will be given names of old area bridges that existed before World War II.
